I will try just about any device that promises to make my life easier with my two dogs. Both are young Labrador pups with tons of energy. Taking both out for a walk can certainly be a challenge. There is about 135 pounds on eight legs with two leads ending with one me. As I try to get them trained to walk on a leash there are a few items I have tried that help with the control issue mainly pulling.
The first dog harness I tried was a nice padded one that was well made and had a o-ring on the strap that ran down the back of the dog. Although a comfortable harness for the dog it did nothing to address the control issue let alone any pulling I was dealing with.
The next dog harness I tried was made of nylon webbing and is comfortable for the dog. On this one there are two o-rings for the lead; one on the strap on the chest area and one on the back. With the lead hooked into the chest strap as the dog pulls, reaches the end of the leash and gets pulled to the side instead of being allowed to continue to pull forward. This gives the handler a chance to stop and get the dog’s attention before moving forward. With the lead hooked into both o-rings very good control is given to the handler. The harness came with a lead that had connection snaps on both ends.
The final dog harness I tried had a little different design on the chest strap. Most of the other had two straps that come down and under the front two leg while this one has a horizontal strap that goes across the chest. The chest straps is designed with a martingale device that when pressure is applied by the dog lunging forward or pulling the strap tightens on the chest providing an uncomfortable but non-painful feedback. In addition the lead will pull the dog to the side instead of letting them continue to pull forward breaking the dog’s concentration on pulling and bringing him back to the handler’s. This design is highly successful with my two Labradors and mixing sessions with the harness and regular leash-collar training we are getting a good handle on the pulling.
My ultimate goal is to have two buddies that walk with me on loose leashes with no pulling. These devices do help gain control over your dog making the walks easier and less stressful for both you and your dog.
